RANT ALERT! Listening To The Experts vs the 12 heads of Doing His Own Research

I read this article this morning just before hauling out 12 heavy bags of debris from our bathroom remodeling.
And then, down in the comments, as it often happens, it ends up in a battle between ‘does his own research’ and ‘listens to the experts’. These would not have to be contradictory. But he who does his own research is not an expert and does listen to non experts, and she who listen to the experts is in fact an expert and thus does not listens to anybody else.
